Inside your toothroot canal

There is a number of different aspects within a single tooth that operate in harmony in order to achieve excellent dental health. When one of these aspects is not functioning healthily, it can create a disharmony for the rest of the tooth.

The majority of your tooth is made from dentine which is an exceptionally hard material. The visible portion of your tooth is known as enamel, while the lower portion of the tooth is called the root. Within this root there are a number of canals connected to the centre of the tooth or the tooth’s pulp.

The pulp contains a number of different materials, including nerves, blood vessels and pulp. The tooth pulp is central to the health of the tooth as it is responsible for providing oxygen, nutrients and feeling. The need for root canal therapy comes about when this pulp becomes infected, likely due to:

  • Deep reaching decay, potentially hidden beneath a filling or in-between teeth
  • Damage or trauma to the tooth
  • Severe gum disease
  • Advanced teeth grinding

What can indicate your tooth pulp is damaged or diseased?

There are a number of symptoms that can indicate that your tooth pulp is infected. This can be symptoms such as:

  • Severe or deep reaching decay
  • Pain when pressure is applied via biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to food or drinks with varying temperatures
  • Gum disease or inflammation around the tooth
  • Loosening of the tooth

If you notice the presence of any of these symptoms please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team who can help you schedule an appointment. There are a number of more serious concerns that can occur in the event that infected tooth pup is ignored, and in worst case scenarios the patient could experience tooth loss or the spread of infection to the surrounding teeth or bone.
